"Now that's room to spread out." That was Dunc's verdict when he showed us around this 5.3 × 3.6m louvred roof pergola in Brighton & Hove, and it is hard to argue with. This one is all about space: room for a big table, a few friends round and a long afternoon in the garden.
How it is laid out
The pergola runs across the back of the house, covering the timber decking that steps down onto the lawn. Two slim posts at the front keep the area open, so the doors from the house lead straight out under cover and the view down the garden stays clear. The dark grey frame sits neatly against the white rendered wall.
In the video you can see the louvred roof both closed and with the louvres opened, letting the sky and sunshine through. That is the appeal of a louvred roof over a seating area: you can shade the table when it is bright, or open it up when you want the light.
Is a larger pergola the right choice?
A pergola over 5m wide is a bigger commitment than a compact one, so it is worth asking a few questions first:
- How many people do you want to seat? If you picture a full dining table with friends round it, a larger footprint gives everyone room to move.
- Is there an existing patio or deck to cover? Matching the pergola to a space you already use, as here, makes it feel part of the house.
- Do you want it attached to the house or out in the garden? Covering the area just outside your back doors makes it the easiest seat to get to.
