Pergola questions

Quick answers on our Riva and Siena pergolas, guarantees, planning permission and installation across England, Wales and Scotland.

What is the difference between Riva and Siena pergolas?

Riva is our metal pergola collection and Siena is our premium aluminium collection. Both are supplied and installed by our own installation teams. Siena comes freestanding or wall-mounted, and Siena Plus adds a motorised louvred roof with integrated lighting. Riva pergolas carry a 3-year guarantee and Siena pergolas carry a 5-year guarantee, so choose by material, style and the features you want.

Where do you install pergolas?

We install pergolas across England, Wales and Scotland. Every installation is carried out by our own installation teams from our base in Wolverhampton, not by third-party fitters. We manage every project from booking to handover. Our landscaping work is local only, covering the Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Walsall and Telford area.

Do I need planning permission for a pergola in England?

Often not, but it depends on the design and your property. In England, a freestanding garden structure is usually treated as an outbuilding, permitted within limits on height, position and garden coverage. Permitted development does not cover verandas or raised platforms, and listed buildings, flats and designated land have tighter rules. Check the Planning Portal guidance and confirm with your local planning authority before you order.

Do I need planning permission for a pergola in Wales?

Usually not for a freestanding pergola that stays within the Welsh permitted development limits for outbuildings. These cover height, how close it sits to the house and boundaries, and garden coverage. The rules are stricter for listed buildings, conservation areas, National Parks and flats. Read the GOV.WALES outbuildings guidance and check with your local planning authority if you are unsure.

Do I need planning permission for a pergola in Scotland?

Scotland has its own householder permitted development rules, so the answer depends on the size, position and type of structure and on your property. Even when planning permission is not needed, a building warrant may be. mygov.scot advises checking with your council before you start. We recommend confirming both points with your council before you order.

What guarantee comes with a pergola?

Riva pergolas come with a 3-year guarantee and Siena pergolas come with a 5-year guarantee. Pergola accessories, such as blinds, glass sides, LED lighting and heaters, carry a 2-year guarantee. We confirm the guarantee that applies to your order at handover, and your project WhatsApp group stays open for any installation queries.

What base does a pergola need?

The installation area must be clear, accessible, level and structurally suitable. A sound patio, concrete base or suitable decking normally works. Where needed, we provide dimensions so the base or foundations can be prepared with the support positions in the right place. Unless your proposal includes groundwork, preparing a suitable base is the customer's responsibility. We check access, base and compatibility before installation.

Can I add glass sides, blinds, lighting or heating to my pergola?

Yes. We supply and fit privacy blinds, sliding glass sides, LED lighting and heaters for our pergolas, either with the pergola or as an upgrade later. Compatibility depends on the model and size, and we confirm it as part of your proposal. Electrical items need a suitable power supply. Accessories carry a 2-year guarantee.

How long does pergola installation take?

From order to installation typically takes 1–2 weeks, or 2–3 weeks in peak season, and the installation itself takes around half a day on site. Once your order is confirmed, we set up a project WhatsApp group and confirm your installation date in writing before we arrive. Our own team installs the pergola, fits the agreed accessories and checks everything works before handover. Dates can be affected by weather and other factors outside our control.

How do I get a proposal for a pergola?

You can design your pergola online in our pergola designer, then request a proposal. Our team reviews your size, finish, accessories, access and base details, and then prepares a clear written proposal for the agreed product and installation. You can also call 01902 202087 or book a survey.
