Think your patio is too small for a pergola? This compact 3 × 2.4m louvred roof pergola in Southend-on-Sea has screens, LED lighting and a heater, with plenty of lawn left.
"My patio's too small for a pergola"
We hear that a lot, so this one is worth a look. In a Southend-on-Sea garden, Karl from our team walked us round a compact 3 × 2.4m louvred roof pergola that covers a neat seating area and still leaves plenty of lawn to enjoy.
Small footprint, full set of features
The pergola stands in the corner of the garden on dark paving, with a two-seater outdoor sofa underneath. Despite the modest size, the video shows it doing everything a larger model does:
- Louvred roof: the slats open right up to let the sky in, or close for shelter.
- Screens: a grey screen at the back, a clear screen on one side that keeps the view open, and a front blind that Karl pulls down by hand.
- Lighting: a green LED strip runs around the frame.
- Heating: a heater sits up under the roof and is switched on with a remote.
Put together, that is a covered seat you could use on a cool spring evening or a showery afternoon, not just on the few really hot days of the year.
Why compact can be the better choice
A smaller pergola isn't just a compromise for small gardens. There are good reasons to choose one:
1. You keep the lawn. In this garden the grass still runs right up to the pergola, so there is room left for children, pets or planting. 2. It fits a corner. Tucking the frame into a corner uses space that is often wasted. 3. It suits how you sit. If it is usually two of you with a coffee, you don't need room for a ten-seat table.
For a sense of scale at the other end of the range, compare this with the 5.3 × 3.6m pergola we fitted in Brighton & Hove.
