A little escape outside the back door: a 4 × 4m louvred roof pergola in Slough

Sometimes the best place for a pergola is the obvious one. In Slough, our team fitted a 4 × 4m louvred roof pergola on the patio right outside the back door, and filmed it once the job was done.

Square and simple

A 4 × 4m frame gives you 16m² of covered space in a neat square footprint. Here it sits over the light paving between the house and the lawn, with a dark grey frame on four slim posts. The sliding doors open straight out underneath it, so it feels like an extension of the room inside rather than somewhere you have to walk to.

Opening up the roof

The video shows the louvres turning. With the blades open you get strips of blue sky and sunshine across the patio; close them and you're covered. They open from underneath, and it only takes a moment to go from shade to sun and back again.

What would you put under it?

The question in the post was simple: how would you use yours? With 16m² there's room for a table and chairs for meals outside, a corner sofa for slow afternoons, or a couple of loungers. Being right by the back door also makes it easy to carry food and drinks out, so it's a space you can use day to day, not just on special occasions.
