Some of the best garden projects are the simplest. In Telford, a 3 × 3m louvred roof pergola has turned a plain corner of the patio into what Karl from our team calls an outdoor sitting room: a cosy spot for a cuppa and a proper catch-up, whatever the weather is doing.
A small footprint that does a lot
The pergola sits against the back of the house, under the window and over the existing paving, with the lawn running right up to its front edge. A 3 × 3m frame is big enough for a pair of armchairs and a low table without swallowing the whole patio or darkening the room behind it. Here, grey rattan chairs and a coffee table fill the space neatly.
The features in this one
The owners went for a well-equipped set-up rather than a bare frame:
- Louvred roof. The roof blades tilt open to let sunlight and fresh air through, then close for shade or when it rains.
- Blinds. Screens on the sides can come down to shelter the seating from wind and give a bit more privacy.
- LED lighting. A strip of colour-changing LEDs runs around the inside of the frame, so it still feels inviting after dark.
- Mounted heater. A heater fixed up under the frame takes the chill off on cooler evenings, which is what turns a summer seat into somewhere you use for most of the year.
Why it works
Putting the pergola right outside the house matters. You do not have to walk anywhere or carry things down the garden; you just step out. Add cover, light and heat, and that short distance is the difference between a space that gets used every day and one that waits for the odd sunny weekend.
