Who needs to go out when you have got this at home? That was the thinking behind this 4 × 3m louvred roof pergola in Coventry, built over a stretch of grey decking at the back of the house. Karl from our team gave us the tour.
Decking plus a pergola
Decking is a natural partner for a pergola. The deck already marks out a level outdoor floor, and the pergola adds a roof and walls to it, so a sitting area becomes an outdoor room. Here the frame covers a rattan corner sofa and table, leaving open decking in front for stepping out onto the lawn.

Karl takes you through the main features:
- The louvred roof. He opens the roof blades to let the light in and closes them again for shade and shelter.
- Side screen. A screen pulls across one side of the pergola for extra shelter and privacy.
- LED lighting. A colour-changing LED strip runs around the frame for evenings.
- A heater. A heater mounted under the roof glows above the seating, ready for cooler nights.
Mornings and evenings
The owners wanted a cosy spot on the decking for a morning coffee or an evening catching up with friends, and a 4 × 3m footprint suits that well. It is roomy enough for a corner sofa and table, but still leaves plenty of garden open around it. With the screen down and the heater on, it is a space that works well beyond the summer months.
