A 4 × 3m louvred roof pergola in Derby turns an existing patio at the end of the garden into a sheltered spot for dining and entertaining. Karl shows us around.
You don't always need to rip a garden apart to get more out of it. In Derby, our team turned an existing part of the garden into a proper outdoor living space with a 4 × 3m louvred roof pergola, and Karl took us for a walk round once it was finished.
The starting point
The pergola sits on the patio at the far end of the garden, past the lawn and the path. That corner was already there; it just wasn't a room. Now it has a dark grey frame, a roof overhead and slatted side screens at each end, with a rattan dining set tucked underneath and the trellis-topped fence as a backdrop.
Three things Karl shows on the tour
1. The louvres. Open them when you want the sunshine, close them when the weather turns. It's the main reason a louvred roof works so well in an English garden, where the forecast can change by lunchtime. 2. Heaters under the roof. Wall-mounted heaters on the frame take the edge off cooler evenings, so the space isn't just for summer. 3. Lighting. LED strips run along the inside of the roof, so the pergola still feels inviting after dark.
Why build on what you already have?
If you've got a patio or paved area you rarely use, a pergola can give it a purpose without new groundwork. Put a table under it and it becomes the obvious place to eat outside or have friends round. That's exactly what's happened here: one more usable space in the garden, ready for entertaining.
