Dinner outside, with a roof over the table. That is the idea behind this 4 × 3m louvred roof pergola in Barnsley, which turns a stretch of decking into a dedicated spot for family meals and evenings with friends. Karl from our team showed us around once it was finished.
Setting the scene
The pergola stands on a raised grey deck at the edge of the lawn, backed by timber fencing and a stepped timber retaining wall that climbs the slope behind it. A grey rattan dining set sits underneath, so the whole thing reads as an outdoor dining room rather than just a cover for some chairs. A 4 × 3m frame gives the table room to breathe, with space to pull chairs out and move around it.
Features worth a closer look
During the walkround, Karl points out the parts that make the space work day to day:
- Louvred roof. The roof blades tilt open for sunshine and fresh air over the table, then close again for shade or when the weather turns.
- Side screen. A screen drops down on one side to shelter diners from the wind and add a bit of privacy.
- LED lighting. A strip of LED lighting runs around the frame, so meals can carry on after dark.
Why a dining pergola makes sense
Plenty of gardens have a table and chairs that only come out on the warmest weekends. Putting a roof over the dining area changes that. A passing shower no longer means a dash indoors, and the lights and screen make an evening meal outside far more comfortable later in the year.
