Can a pergola look at home next to a really impressive property? We went back to Cheltenham to find out, where this 3m × 3.6m louvred roof pergola has just gone in as part of a much bigger garden transformation.

Not even finished yet
The video shows the pergola in the middle of a garden that's still being built. There are crisp white rendered walls, built-in steps and a stone-topped wall around it, set against a large red brick house with hanging baskets by the windows. Some of the paving and planting is still to come, so this isn't the final picture.
That's quite common on bigger projects. The pergola is often one of the fixed points the rest of the design is planned around, so it makes sense to have it in place while the hard landscaping comes together.
Why it works in a setting like this
Our pergolas suit an everyday family garden, but they're also contemporary enough to sit comfortably next to a property like this one. The dark grey frame has clean, straight lines that don't compete with the brickwork, and the roof is low-key from the outside.
From underneath, it's a different story. Look up and you see the louvres, which turn to let the sun in or close to give you cover when the weather changes. In the clip they're open, with blue sky showing between the blades.
What happens next
Once the rest of this garden is finished, we'd love to go back and show the full transformation.
