One for entertaining, one for switching off: two 6 × 3m pergolas in Nottingham

One for entertaining. One for switching off. This client in Nottingham wanted two pergolas, so that's what we delivered.

The pergolas sit side by side on dark decking along the back of the house, looking out over the lawn. Each one is 6 × 3m, which leaves plenty of room underneath. In the video, one has its grey side blinds down, while the other is open to the garden.

Two pergolas, two jobs

Rather than one big space trying to do everything, each pergola has its own purpose.

The entertaining one has room for a big family meal. Everyone can sit down together under cover, and nobody has to squeeze in or keep an eye on the clouds.

The switching-off one is a quiet spot with a comfy sofa. It's the place for a coffee in the morning, a book in the afternoon, or a bit of peace while the party carries on next door.

Why split the space?

A single large pergola works well for lots of gardens. But if you want to host and relax, two separate areas can make more sense:

• the dining space doesn't have to be cleared every time you want to put your feet up
• each area can be set up with its own furniture and extras, such as blinds, lighting or heaters
• the garden feels like it has different rooms, not just one covered patio
